COVID-19 Return to Play Protocols

Each team will be required to name a “COVID-19 Safety Monitor” responsible to receive and relay updates to the team. The Safety Monitor must be at the rink at least 15 minutes prior to each and every ice time to verify and document that each participant and their parent/guardian has completed the self-assessment and sign in process at the facility. Once the team is signed in, the Safety Monitor will send an electronic copy of the team’s COVID-19 attendance sheet to This email address is being protected from spambots. If you have traveled outside of Canada, or someone in your household has traveled outside Canada, you must self-isolate and not participate in any CAL activities for 14 days.

If you have been exposed to someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19, you should self-isolate and are not permitted to participate in hockey activities for 14 days.

If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, you are not permitted to take part in hockey activities.

If you feel unwell, DO NOT COME TO ANY HOCKEY ACTIVITIES.

COVID-19 Protocols

AN INDIVIDUAL refers to all participants-Players, Coaches, and Trainers

If an individual becomes unwell with symptoms of COVID-19 while participating in a CAL activity

  • The individual must stop all participation in the hockey activity.
  • The individual should put on their mask immediately and be isolated from all others in a well-ventilated or outdoor area.
  • They shall be supervised by the team’s COVID-19 Safety Monitor until their parent/guardian arrives.
  • The individual will be sent home with instructions to contact public health and follow all guidelines regarding self-isolation and testing.
  • The COVID-19 Safety Monitor will notify the COVID-19 Safety Committee within 2 hours by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the individual’s name and contact information.
  • A member of the COVID-19 Safety Committee will contact the individual or their parent/guardian to determine if next steps are being taken regarding testing/isolating.

If an individual is tested for COVID-19/player or close contact result pending

  • An individual who is a part of a hockey program and has been tested for COVID-19 must not participate in any hockey activities while waiting for the results of the test and not until a negative test result is received and with direction from Public Health.
  • Any association/team members who were in close contact with the individual should not participate in hockey activities and should follow public health guidelines until the diagnosis of COVID-19 is ruled out by public health.
  • The CAL’s COVID-19 Safety Committee will supply KFL&A with tracking sheets if requested and will follow all directions given by them.

If an individual tests positive for COVID-19-a player or close contact

  • The COVID-19 Safety Committee, if requested, will work with the facility and public health officials to assist in contact tracing.  The session participation attendance sheets may be used to assist public health officials in informing other members who may have been in close contact with the individual.
  • Any association/team members/officials who were in close contact with the individual should not participate in hockey activities for 14 days and should follow all public health guidelines regarding self-isolation and testing.
  • The CAL COVID-19 Safety Committee will inform our OMHA Rep Ron Taylor who will inform the OMHA of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Return to hockey activities following illness

  • If the COVID-19 test was negative or it was determined a test was not necessary, the individual may only return to hockey activities once they no longer have any symptoms of COVID-19 for 24 hours.

Return to hockey activities following COVID-19

  • Any association/team members/officials who were in close contact with the individual should not participate in hockey activities for 14 days and should follow all public health guidelines regarding self-isolation and testing.
  • Following a positive COVID-19 test, an individual must follow all public health guidelines regarding return to activities and be cleared by public health before returning.
