Although volunteers, each member of the coaching staff is required to provide a current Police issued CPIC and take OMHA sanctioned courses to be able to help on the bench. These policies help ensure the quality of hockey our children enjoy.
The coaches and staff are accountable to both the CAL and the OMHA - for their actions during practices, games and in tournaments. Any staff member found not following the rules can and has been suspended.
ALL CAL Team Officials must be familiar with the CAL Hockey Handbook

All Volunteers must have a Speak Out/PRS Certification. (OMHA)

Team Officials (official order)
Team officials are designated as Coach, Trainer, Manager, Assistant Coach or Assistant Trainer (OMHA official order)
- each team registered with OMHA must register at least 2 different persons, a Coach & a Trainer
- after the Coach & Trainer positions are filled, a 3rd team official may be registered as Manager
- if a team wishes to add additional persons they will be designated as an Assistant Coach on the 4th spot and Assistant Trainer or Assistant Coach on the 5th spot on the roster

Coach Levels
CHIP for Novice & IP – All head coaches of house league & roster select PD teams in divisions Novice & below (age 8 & below) must be certified under the Hockey Canada Initiation Program (CHIP) and be registered with OMHA. All head coaches of Novice PD teams are required to have the CHIP certification.
Coach Stream or CHIP for Atom – All head coaches & assistant coaches of house league teams in the Atom division (age 9-10) must have a minimum of CHIP or Coach Stream certification and be registered with the OMHA. All head coaches of PD teams are preferred to have Development 1 certification.
Coach Stream for Peewee through to Juvenile – All head coaches & assistant coaches of house league teams in the divisions PW through Juv (age 11 & above) must have a minimum of NCCP Coach Stream certification and be registered with the OMHA. All head coaches of PD teams are preferred to have Development 1 certification.
**NOTE – The certification for Assistant Coaches & Assistant Trainers for house league & PD teams is the same as that of the Coach or Trainer. All certifications must be up to date for the coming season.
Trainer
It is required that all house league & roster select PD teams include an official who is certified and registered with the OMHA as an HTCP trainer as per OMHA Regulations/Policy.
HTCP Level I – this program is valid for 3 seasons including the season of issue. Those holding a HTCP Level I must attend an HTCP clinic and re-qualify after the 3rd season. There is no equivalency to the HTCP Level 1.
HTCP Level II – Any person who shows proof of current certification in Standard First Aid from a recognized service provider and has successfully completed HTCP Level I may be granted the HTCP Level II. www.omha.net
Manager
Managers must be a minimum of 19 years of age and must be at least two years older than the division age limit for which they are the team Manager. This volunteer must have a minimum of Speak Out/PRS Certification and provide a current police background check.
Bench & Game Sheet Rules:
- every rostered team must have on the bench at each game a Coach & a Trainer
- no more than 5 team officials signed to the official game sheet report and allowed on the bench during game
- every team official shall have an OMHA Speak Out or PRS certification
- every team official shall have a current police background check submitted to their centre (every 3 years)
- all bench staff rostered to the team must print & sign their their name on the game sheet
FAILURE TO COMPLY SHALL RESULT IN A SUSPENSION TO THE OFFENDING OFFICIAL
Age Restrictions:
Certified and registered coaches & assistant coaches sixteen (16) years of age shall be restricted to coaching in Peewee and lower divisions, and must be at least two years older than the division age they are coaching.
