Congratulations to Tim Gregory on receiving the Chris Rayner Memorial Coaching Award.
Tim exemplifies all that the CAL stands for in values and hockey ethics. He played in the CAL from 1965 to 1972 and has coached many of his three kids’ teams over the years. For the last two seasons Tim was coaching one of the Atom PD Panther teams even though he didn’t have a child on the roster – well actually he did – the Assistant Coach was his older son Kevin. Tim has really enjoyed working with Kevin as a peer and that bond has been to the benefit of the development of the kids on the teams. The parents who nominated Tim for the award had many anecdotes of appreciation of Tim and Kevin’s contributions. Tim said that the award meant a lot to him particularly because he had coached IP with Chris Rayner in the CAL many years ago.
Players and parents appreciate the dedication and enthusiasm of those who opt to get involved to help with the teams. But for many coaches, the benefits are mutual. Spending time with your own kids and others in the game we all love pays dividends in so many ways. It’s very gratifying personally to help develop the abilities and character of youth on and off the ice.
Every team needs coaches, a trainer and a manager and aside from a few fellows like Tim, it’s the parents that need to get involved. Many parents don’t feel they know enough about hockey to lead the kids, but the CAL offers the certification courses on teaching the game. Your child needs coaches that enjoy being with kids. Is that you? Or do you know a parent on the team that you think would be good at it?
All the details about coaching can be found here...
We encourage everyone to consider taking a role with the team or the league – it’s the only way we can provide Family Friendly Hockey for the enrichment of our children.
Thank you Tim.
P.S. The deadline for Right of Return registration is next Friday, August 22, 2008. Be sure to register before that date to ensure your child can return to the same team he or she played with last season.
